He gives her that sobering look as he’s reminded just how unlikely it will be that everyone he cares about will survive this war.

She meets his gaze, thinking that everything she cares about is standing right in front of her.

He breaks the long silence by letting her know he’s glad she came to see him, but he’s rooted to the spot as she comes closer. He knows the look in her eyes - the frank and fearless admiration of the man standing in front of her. Those eyes become lidded, and for a heart-stopping moment, he thinks she’s going to kiss him.

But he sees the hesitancy in her eyes, and she merely says she’s glad to have him back. As she leaves, his eyes can’t help but follow her until the door seals shut.

His disappointment rises as he realizes just how much he wanted her to kiss him, and he knows she didn’t because she’s not entirely sure where he stands.

As he gazes out at the stars, he’s determined to find a way to make damn sure she does.
